A Living Will is a legal document also called an advance healthcare directive that specifies what types and levels of medical treatment you desire if you should become incapacitated and unable to make decisions for yourself. The most common statements included in a living will requests that if the patient suffers a terminal illness, or irreversible illness, disease, or condition, that life-sustaining measures that would serve only to prolong dying be withheld or discontinued. More specific living wills may include information regarding an individual’s desire for services such as pain relief, antibiotics, hydration, feeding, and the use of ventilators, blood products, or cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
